An Analysis Errors Diphthong Made By President Joko Widodo Speech

Abstract

This research aimed to known the errors dipthong made by President Jokowi's speech at Ecosperity Week 2023 in Singapore. The researcher focuses only on the mispronunciation of diphthongs, using Roach's theory, who divided diphthongs into two stages: closing diphthongs (e.g. /ei/, /ai/, /ɔɪ/, /əʊ/, /aʊ/), and middle diphthongs (e.g. /ɪə/, /eə/, /ʊə/). This study uses qualitative method and collects data through library research. The study discovered 42 examples of diphthongs from the speech. The diphthong /eɪ/ produced 14 diphthongs, the diphthong /aɪ/ produced 2 diphthongs, the diphthong /ɔɪ/ produced 1 diphthong, the diphthong /aʊ/ produced 3 diphthongs, the diphthong /əʊ/ produced 14 diphthongs, the diphthong /ɪə/ produced 2 diphthongs, the diphthong /eə/ produced 3 diphthongs, and the last diphthong /ʊə/ produced 3 diphthongs. The results of the investigation show that President Joko Widodo has a pronunciation error. There were severeal causes that affect on him pronunciation. In this research, the researcher hopes that this research can make the student, teachers, etc, to improve their pronunciation skill.
