Abstract

In here, researchers will discuss the short story. Short story is a fictional prose that explain a event experienced by the main character. This literary works consist of one core incident packaged in a dense story. Short story consist of two elements, namely intrinsic elements and extrinsic elements. The intrinsic elements of a short story consist of theme, character, characterization, setting, plot, point of view, language style and message. Extrinsic elements consist of the author’s background, community background, and the values contained. These elements will indirectly influence the content of the short story. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The aim of this research is to analyze the intrinsic elements contained in the short story “Sadness” by Anton Chekhov. This research uses various method such as reading, studying, and identifying the content of short story. After research, researchers concluded that the short story “Sadness” by Anton Chekhov has intrinsic elements in the

form of theme, character, characterization, setting, plot, point of view, language style and message. This short story also contains a message to readers that not to be indifferent, help fellow human and be caring when experiencing difficulties and speak kindly to older people.
